Smith and J. Langley. General regret, will be expressed in legal circles throughout the Dominion at the announcement of the death of the Hon. J. A. Tolc, Crown Prosecutor. Auckland, advice concerning which was received hy Press Association ■message. Deceased, who was a 'Minister of the Crown- in the StoutVogel Government from ISS4 to ISS7, was horn in Yorkshire of Irish parentage. He came out with his parents to Auckland, and after receiving his primary education at a Catholic school, went to Sydney, where he matriculated it' 15(55 and graduated B.A. at the Sydney University in ISGS. He then entered the logal profession, being admitted to tTic'Xew South Wales Bar in 1871. On returning to New Zealand and entering practice he soon entered public affairs, and after serving on various local bodies was elected to the House of Representatives as member for Eden in IS7(i. A staunch supporter of Sir George Grey, he soon rose to political prominence, and in ISS4 entered the Stout-Yogel Ministry as Minister of Justice. He held this portfolio until September 18S7, when he was defeated at the General Elections.
