FREIGHTS AND FARES.
An announcement is expected to be inadc in the course of a few days concerning the proposed increases in railway freights and fares. There arc many anomalies in the freights that should be removed. One of these is the discrimination against Australian hardwood timber. It is to be hoped that the Minister will avail himself of the opportunity now afforded for removing this anomaly. The carriage of lime free for a certain distance on the railways will probably be discontinued, as such a concession is totally unwarranted. 80 far as fares are concerned, a substantial increase, may be looked for. The Minister should endeavour, however, to afford some relief to those with families who may be travelling for health or other reasons. A family concession ticket would be very popular with the public, and would tend to remove the impression that those who do their duty by the State are penalised.
