LANDOWNERS FINED
FAILURE TO DESTROY* RABBITS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Last Night. The Magistrate's Court at Cromwell was occupied yesterday in hearing cases against landowners for failing to destroy rabbits, the charges being laid under the Act of 1918., When the defence was heard Mr Mosley, S.M., said he had no option, as power was absolutely in the hands of the inspectors, who had only to Bwear that they had visited any area affected, that in their opinion sufficient and necessary steps were not being taken to destroy rabbits, and a conviction must follow. Although the Act might be excellent, he was placed in an extraordinary and unfortunate position. Fines were imposed, varying from £IOO, in oqe instance( for a second offence), to £4O, and £lO in six cases of first offences. It is expected that the landowners will make strong representations to the Government regarding the position.
