STARVING AUSTRIANS
AN APPEAL. (To the Editor.) Sir, —I Bhall bo glad if you will allow mo, through tlio medium of your columns, to make it gonernlly known that the offerings at all : /Vei in St. Matthew's Parish on Sunday next will be given to tho relief of sufferers (especially children) in tho famine stricken areas of Central Europe. The fragments of information which reach us hero aro sufficient to indicato a condition of affairs pitiable in tho ex ttemo, but I think tho reality is probably moro appalling than wo in this country can adequately rcaliso. We have it on tho cabled authority of Mr. *Hoover that from fifteen to twenty millions of people are practically facing starvation. In theso circumstances, tho call to tho Christian Church is clear and unmistakoablo. An appoal has been made ift England by the two Archbishops, together with Preo Church leaders and a contemporaneous appoal by tho Popo, for collections on Innocents' Day (December 28), and tho Archbishop of Canterbury has cabled to the Primate, asking for tho co-operation of the Church in New Zealand. As there will be many people spending their Christmas holidays away from homo, I would like to ask any who will bo unable to attend Church next Sunday to forward their contributions to mo, that they may bo included in tho collection in this parish.—Yours faithfully, JOHN WALKER, The Vicarage, Masterton, December 21, 1919.
