RENDERED IN CHURCHES. A crowded congregation at St. Patrick's Church, Masterton, last night, listened with devout attention to the rendering of a programme from "The Messiah," The choir was under tho able baton of Mr T. Vaughan. This wonderful composition was finished in 1741, and first produced bj Handel in Dublin in 1742, tho com poser Bpeaking of tho inhabitants of Ireland aa "a polite and generous people." Last evening tho solo numbers wero sung by Master E. Quill, "Shepherd's Abiding in the Field" and "Comfort Ye" (treble), "Every Valley" Mr T. Vaughan (tenor), "Oh, Thou That Tellest" Miss N. O'Dowd (alto), "Ana tho Angel said unto them" Mrs H. Williams, and tho "Hallelujah Chorus." In cbnjunct : on with the numbers from "Tho Messiah," the following items wero included 'Oh, Holy Night" (Adolph Adam) and "Ave Maria." Mrs A. R. Bunny presided at the organ. KNOX CHURCH. Knox Church held a crowded eon* gregatioa last night, whon somo selections by the Choir from "The Messiah," interspersed the usual service. Mr Green opened with the tenor solo "Comfort Ye," the other solos being taken by Mrs Francis, tho Misses Edna Lewis, Jeasio Miller (contralto), Scharnweber, and Messrs Davis and Ibbetßon. The preacher (Rev. A. T. Thompson) took as his subject "The Messiah," and also gave an address upon oratorial music. METHODIST CHURCH. At the Methodiat Church last night the rendering of selections from "Tho Messiah" by members of tho Choir, assisted by local talent, was highly appreciated by the large congregation present. Mr W. S. Jago was at his best in the solos "Comfort Ye," "Behold and See," and "Every Valley." Miss Jackson (soprano) sang "I know that my Redeemer Liveth," Miss Jones (contralto) "0, Thou that Tellest," Mr L. Travera (bass) "For Behold Darkness." Tho large Choir was under tho leadership of Mr S. H. Ralph, and Miss Alice Joneß, L.A.8., A.T.C.L., presided at tho organ.
