WOMEN IN POLITICS.

Although three women contested seats in the recent Parliamentary election in New Zealand, only one of them — Miss Melville —was within reasonable distance of success. It is thought that had the Hon. George Fowlds not been in the field, Miss Melville would have secured an easy win for Grey Lynn. However, the fates were against her. Tho women of the Dominion should not be down-hearted at the failure in their first attempt. They should be encouraged by the fact that already one or two of their sex have secured seats in the Mother of Parliaments. There are some who argue that women are physically and mentally incapable of satisfactorily performing the duties of legislators. For such an argument there is absolutely no justification. We are proud to say that we have in New Zealand at the present time women possessed of judicial minds and high literary attainments who would be an acquisition to any Parliamentary institution in the world.
