CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

MONTHLY MEETING. Mr. R. Brown presided over the monthly meeting of the Council of tho Masterton Chamber of Commerce, held at tho A. and P. Rooms, Masterton, yesterday afternoon. Thero wore also present Messrs R. J. King, D, M. Graham, J. C. Cooper, G, C. Summerill, F. Caselberg, T. Evans, and E. L. Holmwood. A number of apologies for absence wero received. Tho Gcnoral Manager of Railways wroto, forwarding tho new railway timetable. —Received. Mr. D. M. Graham remarked that tho district had been treated very well, taking into consideration the "go-slow" policy of tho miners. Tho Postmaster wrote, requesting that, owing to tho death of the late Mr. John Strang, the Chamber appoint another guarantor in his placo in connection with tho Mastcrton-Spring-grovo mail service.—lt was decided to request Sir Walter Buchanan to take the matter in hand. PERRY STREET. "Tho Public Trust has refused to put its proposed buildings back," stated Mr. R. Brown (tho chairman), speaking in connection with tho proposed widoning of Perry Street. '' That is the position, and I do not think there is any legal remedy. Tho only thing that can bo done, in my opinion, is for tho Borough Council to arrange to ■ pay compensation to all tho owners.'' Mr. King: "Tho Government is evidently a law unto itself, and does not submit its building plans for inspection." Mr. Graham: "I tldnk it's a very bad attitude for tho Public Trust in Masterton to tako up." Mr. Boddington expressed the opinion that if tho proposed alteration took placo, tho site would bo absolutely usoless to the Public Trust Office. Ultimately, on tho motion of Mr. R. J. King, the matter was held over for tho time being. Mr. King stated that he would tako a lively interest in this matter when it came beforo the Borough Council. As far as the matter of plans was concerned, tho Council had no jurisdiction, Mr. Graham thought that the Public Trust Office should be written to, requesting that it re-consider its decision. Ho moved that tho Borough Council be requested to relax no effort in tho matter of widening Perry Street, and that some satisfactory arrangement be agreed upon with tho Public Trust Office. It was also decided to appoint a sub-committee to work in conjunction with the Borough Council to try and effect some arrangement regarding tho purchase of a by-way through the block on Messrs Levin and Co.'s property.
