THE MASTERTON SEAT.

Tho win of Mr. CK B. Sykes for the Musbcrton seat was not unexpected. What eaino as a surprise to tho public was tho remarkable stand made by Mr. A, C. Holms. This young Democrat, without tho assistance of committees, and oil' hie own bat, scored over 2000 votes. Ho will b» heard of on a future occasion. Tho Labour candidate (Mr. A. McLeod) has no causo to bo ashamed of the support ho received. Bo far ns Mr. Matheaon is concerned, ho had to yield to circumstances created by the splitting of votes. A significant feature of the polling is that tho Democratic and Labour candidates between them polled a much groater number of votes than tho two Reform candidates. Had the preferential voting system been in operation, Mr. Holms would undoubtedly have won. We congratulate Mr. Sykes upon his victory, and trust that he will display increasod interest in tho welfare of the district, and become a most useful member as an Independent.
