CHATAUQUA
DEPUTATION TO THE COUNCIL. A deputation representing the guarantors of the Chatauqua waited upon the Masterton Borough Council last night. Mr. Alex. Donald stated that he formally requested the use of the Masterton Park Oval in connection with the forthcoming season of the fjhatauqua. He said the Chatauqua was an educational movement. They were not out for any pecuniary benefit, but for the educational advancement qf all. Mr. A. W. Chapman endorsed the remarks of Mr.. Donald. He stated that the Chataiiqua movement was a great success last year, and he trusted that the Council would eee its way to grant the request and assist in a forward movement* Mr. Robert Russell stated that last year the Chatauqua was much appreciated, and he hoped the Council would see its way clear to grant the request, and help a movement that would boost Masterton.
In reply to a question by a councillor as to where the funds went, Mr. Alex. Donald stated that the Chatauqua had had to pay the expenses of lecturers, etc. The Chatauqua this year was a New Zealand organisation., The Mayor was fully in sympathy with the request, and eulogised the success of the movement last year.
Councillor Atkinson moved that the request be granted. He was in favour of the movement, which had gained the approval of many people upon its previous visit. Councilor Henderson was not in favour or the request being granted. He did not think the Park Oval should be given to any circus or vaudeville organisation, even if it had the name of "Chatauqua." Councillor Perry considered that a charge should be made, and moved that the request be complied with at a fee of £25.
This was seconded by Councillor Bur ridge,. who stated that the sum charged would compensate for. any damage done to the Park. Councillor Watbon did not consider that the previous speakers had the interest of the community at large at hearth He supported the motion. Councillors Candy and McLeod supported the request that the Chatauqua should be granted the use of the Park Oval.
After discussion,, the amendment was withdrawn, and Councillor Atkinson's motion was declared carried.
Masterton residents are eagerly looking forward to the opeamg of tho Chautauqua season, having pleasant recollections of the entertaining and intellectual sessions on die last visit .of the Chautauqua people. The sessions will commence on DecemW 15th and continue to December 19th, and special concessions are offered those aking season ickets.
