THE BUTCHERS' STRIKE

SALE OF WORK.

The Sixth Standard girls of the Masterton District High School held a sale of work on Saturday afternoon lass in the School Assembly Hall, in aid of the Dr. Barnardb Homes. The Mayoress (Mrs. W. H. Jackson) opened the sale, and congratulated the girls on thoir desire to help poor and destitute children. She gave words of encouragement to the girls, and told them that while they were doing work for one of the worthiest of objects they were really doing more for themselves than they thought—they were developing their own characters on high and noblo lines. She was sure their little sale would be a big success, and she hoped it would endourage tliem to continue in their effort to rise to the best'and highest type of womanhood. On the conclusion of the Mayoress' address sales commenced with lightning rapidity, and in a short time everything was gone and £25 had been realised.

toy I eiegrapfT—Fress Association) WELLINGTON, Last Night. Tho Auckland butchers went out on strike to-day, but a number of shops did business as usual. Over 200 unionists marched from Robson Street to Hellaby's big shop in Shortland Street, where the manager and manageress of a branch were working, and counted out the manager.

Twenty-seven police soon arrived from the Central Station, and a detachment of mounted police, in motor-cars, maintained order. The strike is pretty general in the city and suburbs. Hellaby's window was smashed by the crowd being pushed against it.
