THE FOOD SUPPLY

THE TRUST MENACE IMPERIAL TRADE EXPANSION. (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian-N.Z. Cable Association.) Received Last Night, 7.45 o'clock. LONDON, Nov. 13. Addressing the Colonial Institute on tho subject of Empire food production, the Pood Controller referred to the difficulties of food supply due to the small home production aad our lack of organisation. As regards Empire supplies, the consumption was outdis ancing the production. The whole question of supplies must be reconsidered, and the possibility of Empire production should be ed in the forefront. He was aware that the Trusts already had a foothold in certain' Dominions,, but by bringing the Dominions closer in trade relations' wih the Mother Land we could effectively devise methods to enable the Dominions to. relieve themselves of tne menace of the Trusts.

Lord Milner, who presided, said that he was not' sure that we could obtain everything required from tho Empire. Although he w*s an ImI perialist, he 'did not want to live in • a heremetically sealed Empire. On the contrary, he believed that a greater developent of Imperial trade would mean a greater increase in foreign trade. But if we retained command of the sea and had a proper economic development within the Empire, we should be safeguarded against the interruption of supplies of food and raw materials. Lord AlUner added that he' bejieved in tho League of Nations", but was not prepared to s'ako everything upon its immediate success. Aftet all, tho British Empire would supply the driving force in the League, and the best way of providin gfor this was to enable the Empire to be self-sup-porting.
