iMr and Mrs Smith, accompanied by Miss E. Smith, of Masterton, are on a visit to Napier. Mr Frank Wilson, of Napier, who left New Zealand as a private, now holds the rank of lieu-tenant-colonel, commanding the Durham Light Infantry. The lad Finlayson, who sustained severe injuries to thehead through falling from a motor delivery van in Masterton last week, is showing slight signs of improvement, though his condition is still serious. The Hon. Gilbert Carson, M.L.C., has been elected chairman of the Press Association for the ensuing year. « Brigadier-General H. E. Hart, of Carterton, has been wounded and gassed in recent * actions in Flanders. The nature of his wounds has not bfeen cabled and his many friends will hope that they are not serious. Mr R. L. Langdon, of Wai-iti, Tinui, has received the distressing news that another of his sons P.rjvate R. L. Langdon,has made the supreme sacrifice, having been killed in action on February 11th. The deceased, wjho was years of age, was employed on his father's farm prior to enlisting, and was exceptionally popular with all who knew him. He left with the 26th Reinforcements. Mr and Mrs Langdon, whose third son is now on active service, will have the sympathy of the whole community in the loss they have sustained. , Mr Samuel Cook, senr., a very old resident of Otaki, died suddenly at his-hotne on-Wednes-day morning. /He was dressing, when he had a heart attack, 1 and quickly expired. Mr Cook's father was one of the old whalers who settled atFoxton in the very early days, and reared a large amily. The late Mr S. Cook fas resided at Otaki for a great many years, carrying on business as licensed interpreter and land agent.
