WELLINGTON NORTH.
The olectiou ui' .Mr J. P. Luko !(»• succeed Mr .Justice Herdman as representative <>i Wellington North will afford much xmiisfnt-tion. Tho splitting ol' tin vote, which was the* result of the ill-advised action of Mr Massey in selecting a candidate without sufficiently c,insulting the electorate, very nearly ended in disaster. However, the constituency has done itself infinite credit, and has saved the country from humiliation, by returningj Mr Luke. It would have been n national calamity, though not of great political significance locally, had the sinii-cofseriptionist been returned. Mr Luke is a minority representative, bur he has done exceeding well, in all '.he circumstances, to win the seat. The most satisfactory aspect <>i the elc"tion is that the vast majority of the people of Wellington North have endorsed the policyoorl r .compulsory military eervi,ce. It is> sate to say that Mr Holland every anii-cous'ription vote in the constituency, plus not a few who areoppiosed to the calling up of the Second Division.
