A GENERAL ELECTION.
Sir Joseph Ward stated at a public meeting in Wellington on Tuesday niglit that he uas not in favour of ;i general election being held during the currency ot the war. This statement does not- dovetail with a statement made in 'the South recently by the Hon. Q. W, Russell that a general election would be held: this thrift next year. It does hot (follow, of" course, that because Sir Joseph Ward is not in favour of an, election. Cabinet will not decide upon an: appeal try the country. The probabilities are,, however, that the opinion of the Minister of Finance is shared by tluv majority of his colleagues. ' Ap election during the currency of the war would be a useless and unnecessary expense. What the country, desires is an assurance that an election will ho held within a reasonable time from the cessation of hostilities.
