DEVELOPMENT LEAGUES.
It is significant of -tjb.e importance attached to combined action that development leagues, having for their object the .stimulating of primary and secondary industries, are being formed in almost every part of the South Island. The value of such leagues can scarcely be over-estimat-ed. They cannot fail to be attended with beneficial results to the whole of the Dominion. Why should we not have a development league in MastertonP Is there nothing that such a league could doP Could it not d(v mand a vigorous policy of closer settlement? Could not assist in the friovement for harnessing the waters of the district? Could it not. investigate the possibilities of establishing tiie fruit industry on an extensive ba,sis ? Could it not interest itself in securing small settlements for returned soldiers"* adjacent to the town ? Now is the time to get busy. It will be a fatal mistake to wait until the burden of taxation becomes oppressive. We must taive immediate steps to increase our output, and -to develop our latent resources. Who will take the initiative in lorfning a Mastcrton Development League?
