THE FINANCES.
The comparative statement of the finances of New Zeafaml, just issued by Sir Joseph Ward, shows that, in spite of the enormous increase in expenditure necessitated by the war, the Dominion occupies a very strong financial position. The total amount received in land and income tax for the twelve months ending January 31st, 1918, was £5,961,527. This constitutes an easy record so far as the direct taxation of Js T ew Zealand is concerned. It is exceedingly fortunate that the produce of the Dominion has been got away, otherwise the strain would have been more than the people could bear. The most unsatisfactory part of the Minister's statement is that relating to the railways. While the revenue from this source has decreased during the last ten months by £156,042, the expenditure has increased by £168,393. it Ministerial explanation is required in this connection. Sir Joseph WarcTis confident that when the financial year closes a substantial Burplus will be shown in the aggregate amounts.
