WAIRARAPA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY

ANNUAL GATHERING. The Wairarapa Caledonian Society held its forty-second annual gathering in the Public Park, Masterton, yesterday. Every preparation had been made for a record gathering, entries having been received from all parts of New Zealand, but unfortunately the weather proved most unpropitious. However, the directors met at 9.30 a.m., and decided to go on with the sports, although the rain was falling heavily. The president (Mr. E. McEwen) who acted as supervisor, together with his assistants, Messrs;Duncan McLachlanand Mr. J. "E. McV. Calwell, were unremitting in seeing' that every detail was satisfactorily carried out. Great credit is due to the acting-secretary, Miss Gillespie, who had all the arrangements for the gathering so complete that had the weather been at all favourable an absolute record would have been established. *■• . The Ladies' Auxiliary , of the Y.M.C.A. had charge of the catering arrangements ,the takings of-.which arrangements tor the Trench Comforts Fund. The programme as submitted was rendered in its entirety. Every item received an encore. As was exlKH;ted Mr and Mrs Farquhar Young established themselves as "B»:w favourites, and had to respond to frequent encores. The uv«..i- vestail© Harry Hall was heard at his host, and the large audience compelled him to retina again and again. The classic dunces by Jr/m and Thehna McKenxk; of Wellington;* was I to a Masterton audience, and these talented juvenile perform arce reflected the greatest credit upon their teacher. Miss D. Saunders, it is certainly obvious that the Caledonian Society have the happy knVk of catering for every taste, nd the high standard set for the lf>lß concert will he hard to emulate, and certainy difficult to surpass.
