Mr Gresley Lukin, editor of the Wellington "Evening 'Post" is lying seriously, ill.' Trooper J. P. Bryne, son of Mr A. Bryne, of Masterton, was wounded in action ion July 28th. Mr Q. Donald has been re-elected unopposed &s President of the Masterton A. and P. Association. Lieut.-Colonel Austin (wounded) was inspector under the Westland Education Board when lie enlisted. Out of twenty applicants Mr W. G. Griffin, of l/uneviin, lias been appointed clerk to the Carterton BoiOugh Council. A London cable announces that Lieut. John Ritchie, of the Seafcuth Highlanders, a Dunedinite, has been killed in France. The casualty list received yesterday announced that Lance-Corporal J. I*. ,W. Godfrey, son of Mr F. Godfrey, of Masterton, had died of wounds on July 22nd. The marriage of Miss Mabel Millei, youngest daughter (twin) of Mrs M. R. (Miller, Cameron road, Napier, and Mr James Pennythorne, manager of the Egyptian State Railways, and son of Captain Pennythorne, late of the Jioyal Artillery, England, is to tjake JpTaoo sliortjly an Egypt, Miss Mabel Miller was lor some years in the Napier and Wellington Exchange, and a year ago she obtained leave of absence to go with her sister (Sister Lalla Miller, of Pahiatua) to nurse the wounded soldiers in Egypt. In the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon, the Premier moved a vote of appreciation ot the services of the late Mr John Stevens, ex-M.P.. of Rangitikei, and sympathy with his faVnily." Sir Joseph. Ward seconded and was followed by Messrs Jkuck, (Field, and Russell. The motion was passed in silence. A similar vote as passed in reference to the late Mr Wm. Barron, ex-M.P., for Caver sham. Tlio House adjourned at 4 p.m; for the remainder of the afternoon sitting, as a tribute ctf respect to the deceased members. At Monday night's meeting of the Carterton Borough Council, mention was made of the coming departure of Mr L. H, 'Smart, frc'm the service of the Council, and the Mayor was authorised to draw up and- present him with a testimonial from, the Council, m recognition of his unflagging zeal in the administration of the .Council's affairs. Cr. Kitchen moved further, that in addition to the test.monial, Mr Smart* be presented with a month's salary. During his term with the Council, he had liad no holiday and his work had been done with the greatest efficiency. The month's salary could be offered as a mark k'f the esteem and appreciation of the Council. The Mayor seconded and thfe motion was carried unanimously. a
