STANDARD HOUSE RENT.

The CowrnmerLt lias decided that, in fixing the .standard for house rent during the currency cf the war, eight per cent, upon the capital value shall be a fair arrangement. This is what has been recognised for years as a satisfactory basis. Five per cent, is allowed (in capital, and three per cent, for depreciation on wooden > buildings. When it is however, that the interest on m>ney is increasing, and that the Government itself has set a standard above five per cent, lor war debentures, it is questionable whether eight per cent, is a fair standard to fix for owners of house property. If building -operations are to be proceeded with, nine per. cent, would not be at all out of reason, as a maximum.
