THE PAHIATUA SEAT.
A conference is to be held at Paliiatua to-day, to select a candidate to succeed ;the late 'Mr J, H. Escott as representative of the district in Parliament. The selection should, in al! fairness, be made by the supporters of the deceased politician, aided by the Prime Minister himself. Mr G. H. Smith is mentioned a s s a probable candidate, and he would be a worthy successor to a useful member. Nevertheless the claims of Mr R. B. Ross cannot b e discounted. This gentleman has a wide Parliamentary experience, and be is understood to have modified his views to such an extent that he would be acceptable tc the Reform Party. Whatever happens, we must not have such a division of opinion as will create strife. There must not be a Party fight, under a nv circumstances.
