SOLDIERS AND HOTELS.
DEFENCE MINISTER ON SUGGESTED RESTRICTIONS.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDJN. Tuesday.
The Dunedin Prespytery to-day received replies from Cabinet Ministers respecting -the representations as to restrictions to be imposed' upon the sale of intexicating liquor to-members of the expeditionary force. Mr Allen, after drawing attention to certain steps already taken, said:—"l find it hard to believe that placing all hotels out of bound/would be a cure for the evil which exists, and for this reason that though such prohibition .uight prevent a trooper in New Zealand from securing intoxicating liquor at a public bar, as soon as he, is outride the shores of New Zealand he will come into , different conditions, such as Egypt, where liquor, even by unlicensed fellers, is at his disposal. I wonder what he will do then, when ho finds himself at liberty outside of New Zealand, and in contact with temptations around him, especially if he fee]S that be has ben treated as a child in New Zealand. May I sugge:<t to you and your church, and the churches generally, that though prohibiting bars in "New Zealand may seem to you to diminish drunkenness in this country, it is not the way to make a man strong enough to rcist temptation when in the middle of things which may tempt him ? T know bow difficult it is to train men that they may resist temptation. T sometimes feel that those in earnest about this question are appalled by the difficulties, and seek to find an easier road, bu + a much less efficient one for the purpose."
