OBITUARY.

SIR WILLIAM RUSSELL. M.L.C. (By Tdegraph — Press Association.) NAPIER, This Morning. The death occurred at his home at Flaxmere, near Hastings, shortly after midinight, of Sir William Russell, M.L.C.

The late Sir William Russell, who had been ailing for some weeks past ira Wellington, returned to his home at Flaxmere only a few days ago. His condition on Saturday last was reported to !>e serious, but few expected that his end was so near. The deceased was born at Sandhurst. Berkshire (England) on November 12th, 1838, and was thus seventy-five years of age. He was a son of Colonel Andrew Hamilton Russell. He was educated a't the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, and joined the 58th Regiment in England in 1855. In 1857 he joined the headquarters of the Regiment in New Zealand, returning to England in 1858. He came to New Zealand again with the 14th Regiment in 1861. He retired from the Army in 1862, and settled in Hawke's Bay. He entered the Provincial Council of Hawke's Bav in 1869, and remained a member until .the dissolution of the Provinces. He was elected M.H.R. for Napier in 1875, and was defeated in 1881 by Mr F. Sutton. He was re-elected for Hawke's Bay in 1883,. and represented the constituency until he was defeated by Mr F. Dillon in 1905. He was Postmaster-General in 1884; Colonial Secretary and Minister of Justice and Defence 1889-91. He represented New Zealand at the Federal Conference in Melbourne in £B9O, and attended the Federation. Convention at Sydney in lß9i. He had been a member of the Hawke's Bay Education Board, Hawke's Bay County Council, Hospital Board, etc. He was a prominent member of the Hawke's Bay Racing CluV and at one time owned a number of racehorses. He was married in 1867. and leaTes a widow and family. He had resided in "England for several years of late, and was appointed to the Legislative Council only a month or two back.
