MUNICIPAL LOANS.
The proposal made by Mr W. I). Lysnar, of Gisborne, that an agency should be established in London for the raising of municipal loans for the Dominion ha t s a good deal to recommend it. By such an agency; a considerable sum might be saved' to municipalities in travelling expenses and brokerages. At time, it would not be -wise for Borough Councils to pledge themselves- to raise their loans through any fixed agency. It might transpire that money is available on better terms within the Dominion N than outside. Indeed, local authorities have already proved that it • ig,, possible >to secure money on debentures from capitalists in New Zealand. The Masterton Borough Council has acted somewhat precipitately in affirming the principle laid down by Mr Lysnar and in pledging itself tp raise money through a London company, if- formed, "rt should, at iany rate, have waited unti 1 the whole matter had been thrashed out'by the Municipal Conference..
