THE SLAUGHTERMEM

A NEW MOVE. SLAUGHTERMEN SEEK REREG I STIUTI ON., UN Dl'Ul THE ARBITRATION ACT. (By Telegraph. — rress Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. Tho secretary of tho Slaughtermen's Federation \states tliat the Unions which aro involved in the present dispute (Wellington, Poverty Iky, and Canterbury) have made application for re-registration under the Arbitration Act. Tho other throe unions (Auckland, Otago and Southland) will make similar applications shortly, and when all the unions are registered again, tho Federation will follow; suit. The previous registrations, it may bo noted, of Unions and Federation, were cancelled on January 16th'. • Asked for an -explanation of this move, the secretary (Mr Reardon) would only say, "It is part of our plan," So far as tho two Wellington meat freezing companies are concerned, v.o apparent move has been made in the direction of 'securing free labour to man the killing boards at T'etone and Ngnhnurnvsra in place of the slaughtermen who are now taking a holiday. 'Hie works are idle, and it is understood they aro likely to remain so for a time. This, however, cannot be taken to moan that the companies are not making preparation to re-start should circumstances . prove favourable. It is believed that some very definite plans have been evolved, but that before putting them into operation the companies .are waiting to see how other concerns fare in their invitations to free labour. Wellington seems to ho leerardod as the real testing ground of the strike, and the oomnp.nios here, in consequence, are gdng to move with great caution. A slaughterman who arrived from England bv tho Renniera, last evening was told to-day that there was any amount, of work to hi done.in his particular line if ho liked to take it. He had. however,- such a dislike of the term ''.veal)," that he would not run the risk of having it avmh'ed to him, so ho sought other employment instead.
