POSITION IN HAWKE'S BAY.
PROSPECT KTF WORKS . . ■ • RESUMING. HASTINGS. Last Night. ■ The position in regard to the* slaughtermen's strike, in so, far as it- concorns the local works, is unchanged'. Messrs Borthwiek and Sons, of Paki Paki. liave not received any applications for places' 'on t-hjp killing "board, and the works are closed down in the meantime. Applications for "hooks" at Tomoana are coming in freely, and it is anticipated that the works will reopen on Wednesday •morning with a full hoard. The rate of pay will he the same, as offered the men who went out on strike, viz., 27s 6d per hundred. Should these anticipations be realised, slaughtering will be resumed on Wednesday, and 'the necessity of dispensing with the services of the'hands in other departments will be obviated. Questioned by a reporter-, one of the strikers said they had mo intention of going back 011 their demands and would fight to the bitter end. Referring to the proposal of the companies to man the 4 boards with free labour, the speaker said the firms might be satisfied witli their work, hut he doubted if -the farmers would put up with it for very long.
