WELLINGTON PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. SPLENDIU STAND Bi WAiiiARAPA. (DEFEATED BY ONE POINT FOR I THE McATLLY SHIELD. | (By Telegraph- -L'rcss Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Nigkt. Tho Wellington Provincial Amaxour Athletic Champion meeting was held yesterday in splendid weather, before an attendance of 2000 or 3000 people. The track was good, but the race* ware uninteresting, except in the long distance events. About ..seventyfive men competed, including a contingent from tho Wairarapa.. Tho three-mile flat championship provided tho best contest. At the end of tho first mile, L. Cook (Wairarapa), O. Pugh (Civil Service) and J. F. Byrne (Athletic) wore in the leading positions. They were the same at tho end of tho second mile. Then Byrne led in tho next half mile, to bo displaced by Cook till fifty yards from the tape, when Byrne made a great dash, and got homo first. Pugh (tho Jiolder of the championship) had fallen away. Tho fate of the McVilly Shield was in doubt right up to the last event; but it fell to the Wellington Club (the holders) who led by ono point from Wairarapa—47 to 46. Tho other Club scores were: Civil Service, 20 ; Athletic, 15 ; Victoria College, 14 ;' Petone, 4; Manawatu, 3; Central Harriers, 1; Seatoun, 0. The results of the various events were as follow: 75 Yards Handicap.—H. Hart 1, L. Murphy 2, B. Thompson, 3. Won by two yards. Time, 7 3-ssec High Jump.—P. E. Dovle '(oft 6in), 1; L.
