AN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE.

When Sir Joseph. Ward- wanted'to raise a loan on the English market on advantageous terms, he offered a Dreadnought to the Motherland. Now that the time for payment.has arrived, and we want more money, it seems that Mr James Allen is playing a similar; game to that of his astute predecessor. He is reported to have told an interviewer in London thatNew Zealand hoped to place an expeditionary force of eight thousand at the disposal of the Mother Country, for service in any part of the Empire. We do not know upon what authority lie makes this statement. ,A\'e do know, however, that if an offer of the kind is made without Parliament first being.consulted, the Minister of Defence will bring a hornet's nest around his head, and he will be subjected to a more violent criticism than that which was provoked by the indiscreet action of Sir Joseph Wa.rd. Wo' prefer to think, in the meantime, that the cable lias not done justice to Mr Allen.
