THE SLAUGHTERING CRISIS
The determination of the Meat Freezing Companies to resist the domands of the .slaughtermen, and to make no fresh, proposals, has come as a surprise to the farming community. It was hoped, up to the very last, that a compromise would have been arrived at, and that thc;o would have keen no necessity for the closing of works at the busiest season c-f the year. The companies have, no doubt, been influenced in their decision by the prospect of free labour being available. They are hopeful that, in the •course of a week or two, they wil! have a sufficient number of butchers willing to workafc 27 8 6d per hundred to justify the re-opening 0 f the works. Whether their hopes will be realised, remains to be seen. For our part, we are rather apprehensive. We are inclined to think that the employment of free labour will produce more serious consequences than the companies suppose, and we do not think the time is ripe for an industrial crisis of the magnitude that is threatened.
