EFFECT UPON NEW ZEALAND.
INCREASED CHARGES ON FROZEN MEAT.
Mr J. C. Cooper, Managing Director of Wellington Farmers' Meat Company, received advice by this week's moil from the proprietors of Hay's Wharf, Ltd., the Union Cold Storage Co., Ltd., the Fort of- London Authority, and the London Oontral '.Markets Cold Storage Co., Ltd., •stating that, in consequence- of tflie additional expenses entailied (by the recent increase of wages, an. amount equal to 7$ per cent, will .be added to all charges on frozen .and other produce, as from August 14th next. In conversation with a represemta.tive of the Age, Mi- J. C. Cooper •stated that the increased charge will mean a heavy toll upon the produce of this. Dominion. At the present time, the. total charge® from the ship's hold to the Slmithfield market amount to £d per lb.. The increase will represent 7£ per cent, on possdr My .six ddfferient forms of handling. It will mean, approximately, about 3d per head on. all carcases of mutton and lamb shipped Home. This would represent, on output equal -to thiat of last season, viz., 120,000, a sum of no less than £ISOO. Taking the Dominion, as a whole, the iloss will run into many thousands of pounds.
