". (From Our Resident Reporter). Friday. The ordinary meeting of Lodge Pabiatua, U.A.0.D., was held last evening, Bro. J. Swiggs, A.U., j presiding. Correspondence from the / Friendly Societies' Council in connec- J tion with the Orphanage Fund was J received, and it was decided to hold the matter over until quarter night, February 17th. It was resolved to entertain Myrtle Lode, Eketahuna, on the same evening. One candidate was proposed for membership. The secretary of the local Cricket Club has» donated a trophy for the Pahiatua batsman putting up the highest score in the return match Pahiatua v. Mangatainoka, in the first innings, the winner to be a financial member of the club. The Rev. W» H. Speer has donated a cricket ball for the club. ■ The following team will represent the Town members of the local tennis club in their match against the Country members to-morrow after-noofl,--Eccleton, Ulrich, bwainson, Abraham, Speer, W. J. Collins, Howard, Mo.bherry, Lilly and Reeve. Owing to drainage operations being •carried on at the local ground, it has been decided to play the match on the Mangatainoka eround at 1-45 p.m. -siharp. Some first-class bats are included in both teams, and the game tie a good one: There was a good attendance at! the meeting of the Chamber of Com-; merce last evening, the President presiding. It was resolved to urge , upon the Minister of Railways the necessity of reinstating the 6.3# a.m. train from Masterton North- ; ward. Other ordinary business was transacted. Quite a large number of Pahiatua residents journeyed to Newman yesterday to the scene of the oombined Catholic picnic, and they report having a very successful day's outing. The Pahiatua rink of bowlers who challenged the Feeding rink (the holders of the Dixon Cup), played for .the coveted trophy on Wednesday last, at Feilding. The home rink proved too much for.the visitors, the match resulting-- Feilding 33, Pahiatua 11. Stock dealers and farmers who usually visit the stock sales at Palmerston North and Dannevirke, are still lamenting the fact that owing to the present morning train arrangements, that are unable to attend these sales. Mr W. McKenzie, of Masterton, has consented to act as ope of the judges at the A. and P. Show on Wednesday next. The following stewards have been appointed:—Horses: S. W. Whyte, W. and J- Halliday; Sheep—S. Tipping, J. Sterling, XP. Girdwood, R. Williams, L. Hulbrooke, H. F. Coom; CJattle—E. Darley, S. Hickling, J. Bourke, E. S. Holilaway, M. Galvin, G. H. Brown. The Junior cadets of the Pahiatua School, under Captain White-Scott, are to go into camp at the Hutt Park at the latter end of this month, on the occasion of Lord Kitchener's visit.

Lieutenant Clifton, of Pahiatua, who was successful in winning some of the prize money at the recent Ruahine rifle shoooting meeting, stales that the meeting was a very successful one. Lieutenant Clifton takes a keen interest in volunteering matters, and he thi that in the near future handicap meeting such a the one just held will find popular favour, in many districts. It is understood that the local fire brigade have elected a captain to take the place of Captain M-cAlister, who has left the district, and the mslter will be brought up or the Borough "Council's approval at • the Council's .meeting on Monday evening next. A special meeting I ' of the Pahiatua .Racing Club will be held to-morrow .evening, in the Commercial Hotel. * Mr L, E. Hill, of Mangahao, has ■donated a special prize of two guineas or the best draught foal on the ground at the A. and P. Show on ■Wednesday'next. Mrs Farrow, of Dannevirke, has accepted the position of judge of fancy work, industries and preserves/and Mr J. Macara .of Masterton, will assist in the judging of the horses. The.opening of the Kaitawa Rifle Club will take place on Saturday next. The residents of Kaitawa are

taking a keen interest in the cere- I inwffiy, and Saturday promises to be an eventful day for that strict: Mr Halliday, senr., who was mentioned in this morning's issue as having disposed of his property at: Makairo, was the first settler to ; reside in that district, ihaving taken up his residence in Makairo some twenty-three years ago, and Mr Hal-; liday could doubtless tell of many hardships entailed in the early days.
