*- AFFAIRS IN IRELAND. WIDESPREAD USE OF ARMS. A JUDGE'S STATEMENT. LONDON, March 5. Several prisoners indictpd at the Clare Assizes under Acts dealing with "Whiteboyism," were acquitted. Mr Justice Wright commented on the widespread use of firearms, and said that almost everybody in one locality was armed. The Earl of Crewe (Secretary of State for the Colonies), speaking in |" the" Government ¥/o.ii considering the best means to check the carrying of firearms in Ireland. The "Whi eboyw" were member's) Oi an illegal agrarian formed in Ireland about the year 1761, whose obj'eCS was, according to Lecky, "to do justice to the poor by restoring the ancient commons and redressing other grievances." The members of the Association assembled at night with white frocks over their other clothes, threw down fences, and levelled enclosures, and destroyed the property <if landlords or others, whose conduct did not meet the views of the Association.
