CARTERTON NEWS.

(From Our Resident Reporter). Wednesday. A slight shower of rain fell here this morning, but was int sufficient to do any good. Miss Effie Booth left here by this afternoon's express, en route for Auckland, and from there on a prolonged visit to Europe. MrJohn Hart will leave Carterton shortly to follow farming in Hawke's Bay. At a meeting of teachers at the residence of Mr and Mrs W. W. Mansfield, last evening, the balance sheet in connection with the Variety Fair held in aid of the Methodist Sunday School was adopted. The receipts amounted to £32 13s, and th 3 expenses £1 13s, leaving a net profit of £3l. Or that si.m £5 has been handed to the Sunday School treasurer, and the balance of £26 <'s to be used in the erection of an infants' class room.

The chainmn of the Wairarapa South County Council, the Mayor of Carterton, members of the water race committee, < n nd some councillors fiom each body, met yesterday at the headworks of the water races. It was found that changes in the river threaten to cause the water to leave the intake, and it was decided to clear the coursa of some l?rge boulders above the works, and put in a small groyne below, which it is expected will keep the water where it

is wanted. The disappearance of trees' along the watershed of the Waingawa is having the effect of causing the water after heavy rain to rush down with greater velocity, with the result that in some parts the bed of the river is being much deepened. Just below the head works of the water race system the bed has lowered some eight or nine feet, and if this is not counteracted there is a risk of the headworks being left high and dry. The idea of the proposed clearance above the works, and the groyne below, is to cause the deepening process to take place higher up, and to fill up the hollow that has been made below. Mr Fred Perrin, at one time a resident of Carterton, is at present on a visit to this town. Miss M. Smith, daughter of the late Constable Smith, of Carterton, is at present visiting friends here. To-morrow a cricket match will be played on Carrington Park between Carterton and Ahiakouka. The teams chosen are:— Carterton — Phelps, Hart, Feast, C. Reid, Rev. Thomp. I son, W. Gallon, TumucHffe (2), j Fairbrother (2), and another. Ahiaikouka:—C. Gallon, P. Bsnnin, Lep''pein, W. Tully, Feh&t (3), Willi- ' aras (3), and another.
