WEDDING AT MANGATAINOKA
A very popular wedding was celebrated at St. Merit's Church. Manga- , tainoka, this morning, when Miss ■ Hilda Barrell was married to Mr William Wotherspoor. The Rev. A. ' W. H. Compton officiated, and the church was prettily decorated for the occasion, the service being fully choral. As the bridal party entered and left the church, Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" wa nicely played by Miss Sicely on the organ. The bride, who was given a-vav by her father, loDked charming in a very becoming dress of cream silk crepe-da-chene, trimmed with embroidered chiffon and finished with silver tassels and long satin streamers, and she wore the orthodox veil and orange blossoms, and carried a lovely shower bouquet. The bridesmaids, four in number, were very neatly dressed, Misses M. Quinlan and R. Barrell being dressed in green silk muslin trimmed with cream insertion and valencines lace and hats to match, Miss S. Barrell in pink silk muslin trimmed with valencines lace and hat to match, and Miss C. Wotherspoon in white silk muslin trimmed with valencines lace and hat to match. Mr Len Barrell acted as best man. After the ceremony the bridal party were driven to the Library Hall, where a large number of guests sat down to a wedding breakfast, the catering being in the capable hands of Mr East. The usual toasts and felicitous speeches were made and honoured. In proposing the health of the bride and bridegroom, the Rev. Mr Compton stated that Mrs Wotherspoon was the daughter of a very old and esteemed resident of Mangatainoka, Mr Barrell having resided there for many years. Mrs Wotherppoon had for some time past officiated at the organ at St. Mark's Church, and both the speaker and the congregation would miss her very much. She was always one of the first to assist, with music at any of the social functions, and in this respect the district would suffer materially. The bridegroom's present to the bride was a half hoop of opals, to the chief bridesmaid an amethyst an.l paurl pendant, and to the others gold brooches set in rubies and pearl?. The bride presented the bridegroom with a set of solid gold sleeve links. Mr and Mrs Wotherspoon were the
recipients of many handsome and useful presents, and guests were prasent from both the North ard South Island. The newly wedded couple left for the North by the express, where the honeymoon is to be spent. This evening Mr and Mrs Barrell gave a social in the Library Hall in honour of their daughter's wedding. About a hundred people were present, and an enjoyable time was spent, Mr and Mrs Barrell receiving hearty cheers for their hospitality.
'GENERAL. | The fortnightly meeting of the Fire Brigade was last evening, Capt. McAlister- presiding. Some discussion took place regarding the '. team taking a portion « ; of the plant for practising purposes at Auckland, and it was finally decided that the team be allowed to take with them the necessary gear. As the fire brigade committee had sanctioned the procuring of new threads on some old hydrants to fix the canvas in. hand, the taking away of the necessay gear to Auckland will not affect the fire fighting capacity of the brigade, should a tire occur. The brigade has been re-organised for the period that the team will be away, and six or eight ex-firemen are being enrolled to take the place of the absent men. That the brigade has fully considered the safety of is plainly evident by their action in this matter. A large number cf honorary members have been enrolled thi3 year. The team for Auckland will leave to-morrow (Thursday), and no doubt they will give a good account of themselves.
