C.J.C. MEETING. By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, August 13. Although the weather was cold and ■cheerless, for the opening day of the Grand National Meeting, the attendance was excellent. The going was in capital order, and the racing was full of interest, the Steeplechase in particular being one of the prettiest seen at Riccai'ton. Eclair's time established a record for the race, the previous best being Slow Tom's 7min 14 3-ssec. There were a few spills durinj the day, but both the riders and horses escaped serious injury. Totalisator investments amounted to £21,555, an increase of £4,828 on last year. Result?: — Hunters' Hurdles Handicap once round and a distance. —Canton, 11.1, 1; Crispinot, 11.7, 2;Makuri, 12.7, 3. Also started—Kiakamako 11.7, Roan Banner 11.0. Won easily by two length?. Time, 3rnin 14 l-ssec. Dividend, £4 12s.

Romany Lad and Irish made the running for the first mile, but at the end of circuit Needlework had taken charge and led to the last fence. In the run home Eclair cut him down, and won a fine race by a length. Kaitere was a. length and a half away third and Phaetonitis fourth. Time, 7min 10 2-ssec. Dividends, £7lßs and £3 9s.
