DEPARTMENT OF LABOUR.

The following, concerning Tinui and Masterton, is taken from the Journal of the Department of Labour for May:—• TINUI. Building Trades: All local carpenters and carpenters from adjoining districts wore busy up to a week ago, when they finished erecting and repairing dwell inghouses: since then there has been very little work done owing to the wet weather. Retail trade: Fair business has been done in all branches during the month. Miscellaneous: Blacksmiths, saddlers, and bootmakers have been doing a fair business during the month, but the trade, has not increased sufficiently to put on extra hands. Unskilled labour: All local wen have been fairly employed during the month at scrub-cutting, grass-seed sowing, fencing, and road-work. Several swaggers were seen on the road during the month; most of them got employment at scrub-cutting and grass-seed sowing. There is little damand for outside labour in this district at the present time. MASTERTON. Business generally is good, and the district continues to progress. Very little wet weather has been experienced during the period under review, and all classes of tradesmen are fully employed. Building trades: Buildings of vari ous kinds are in course of erection; consequently carpenters and joiners have been kept busy, plumbers being extremely so. Engineering: Good steady business; all hands fully employed. Moulding: Good; all working full time. Coachbuilding: Business continues good; local tradesmen fully employed. Tailoring: About the average for this time of the year; hands making full time. Saddle and harness making: Very fair, with prospects of continuing. Furniture trade: Good in all branches. Flax-mills: Hands being paid off at some mills owing to closing down for season. Retail trade (general): Business is not quite up to the standard. Dressmaking: Fair average business reported.
