It is deemed impracticable to remove Varischetti (who is shut in by water in the Westralia East mine) by bringing him a diving dress. The water in the mine is being lowered six feet per day. Divers convey to Varischetti regular food supplies. The Italian Consul expresses his profound thanks for the efforts of the brave diver Hughes and others, which, he says, are so splendidly characteristic of the race. GAMBLING PLACES. PRINCIPALS SURRENDER. Received March 25, 10.25 a.m. MELBOURNE, March 25. < In view of an application to quarantine J," Wren's tote" and City Tattersall's Club, the principals have both unconditionally surrendered, "and have promised to take no further part in their respective businesses. The police have accepted the surrender conditional on' Cabinet approving their acceptance. The Acting-Premier does not see how the Government can enter into a bargain with offenders against the law. (These were the first applications " made under the "quarantine" provisions of the Victorian Lotteries, Gaming, and Betting Act of 1906. There were two cases, applications being made that the place known as the Collingwopd, or "Wren's," tote, between Sackville and Johnston Streets, <sollingwood, and that known as CityJTattersall's Club, in Bourke Street, should be declared common ( gaming-houses within of section 38 of the Act. In thatjsection it is provided that on the affidavit of an officer of police showingreasonable grounds for suspecting that any house, office, room, or place, whether licensed or registered under any Act whatsoever or not, is used as a common gaming-house, or as a means of access to or exit or escape from any common gaming-house, the Supreme Court may declare such office, room, or place to be a common Affidavits were copiously lodged by the police, and it is these that have brought about the surrender.)
