THE PORT STEPHENS.

- ' ' NAUTICAL ENQUIRY. By Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN, October 17, ' A nautical enquiry was held to-day into the circumstances connected with the abandonment of the steamer Port Stephens, before Mr Graham, S.M., and Captains Gordon and Moffatt, and A. R. Morrison (assessors). The evidence did not disclose anything new save that when the steamer was abandoned the hatches were off. Arthur Edwin Jolly (master) said that he supposed it was his duty to see to the provision-?. There was enough on board ior a fortnight, or double the time of the voyage to Newcastle. He was inclined to think it there hid been more provisions on board he would have abandoned the steamer. He acted to the best of his skill and judgment when he'saw no possibility of repairs or assistance. He knew he was drifting southwards, and had only a fortnight's provisions on board.
