AUCKLAND, September 29. The report and balaco sbeec of the South British Insurance Company for the year ended August 31st shows a 1 profit of £64,833 2s 6d, after the addition of £IO,OOO to the re insurance fund. The amount at iredit of profit and loss is £95,635 13a Id. Forty thousand pounds has been added to the reserve fund. The directors recommend payment of a dividend for the last half-year of 3s per share, making with interim dividend 5s 0d for the year; £25,406 0s 4d is carried forward to next year's account.

In late German experiments a colourless diamond from Borneo became pale 'yellow after an exposure of eight days to impure radium bromide, deeper yellow in eight days more, and was wholly restored to its original colourlessness by heating to redness. The ligbt blue of a sapphire turned to green in two hours, then to yellow, reddish yellow, and after fourteen days to yellowish brown. The colour disappeared ou buating, a light yellow invariably reappeaiing, however, when the stpue became cold. The tays did not affect the colour of the amethyst, ruby, blue topaz, or chrysnberyl; but 9 tour raaliue with a green end became green at any other point on which the rays acted.
