Many precious atones show a remarkable change of colour iu the presence of radium. In late German experiments a colourless diamond from Borneo became pale 'yellow after an exposure of eight days to impure radium bromide, deeper yellow in eight days more, and was wholly restored to its original colourlessness by heating to redness. The ligbt blue of a sapphire turned to green in two hours, then to yellow, reddish yellow, and after fourteen days to yellowish brown. The colour disappeared ou buating, a light yellow invariably reappeaiing, however, when the stpue became cold. The tays did not affect the colour of the amethyst, ruby, blue topaz, or chrysnberyl; but 9 tour raaliue with a green end became green at any other point on which the rays acted.
