VOLCANIC ERUPTION
SYDNEY, August 18. The missioaary yacht John Williams, which has arrived here from Samoa, reports that the new volcano in Savaii is a magnificent flight. It is stillein'tting dense volumes of smoke, and great columns of steam are to be seen where the lava cornea in contaot with the s^a.
SYDNEY HORSE SALES.
SYDNEY, August 18. At the horse sales Mr Ross, of New Zealand, paid 'lO guineas for a draught mare.
BATHURST-SYDNEY KOAD RACE.
Reoeived August 38, 7.59 p.m. SYDNEY, August 18. The road race, Batnurst to Sydney, was won cy T. Larcombe, in shr 6min. Merrick was second, taking 3mia longer than Larcombe. Reoeived August 19, i.oi p.m. SYDNEY, August 19. Out of 103 acceptors 65 faced the starter. Larcombe's riding time was 9hr llmin ssec, Merrick's 9br 49min. Brennan finished third in lOhr 13min.
DR. DANYSZ'S EXPERIMENTS,
SYDNEY, August 18. The preliminary experiments now proceeding have demonstrated that Dr. Danysz's virus is effective against rabbits.
VICTORIAN LOAN REDEMPTION BILL.
MELBOURNE, August 18. The State Assembly passed the Four-million loan .Redemption Bill. The Premier (Mr Bent) explained that the importance of the measure lay in the fact that they would have power to pay this money iu Melbourne. It was an open seoret that ; thpy would have no difficulty in raising the loan.
A PUBLICAN ROBBED.
MELBOURNE. August 18. Hanrahn, a publican at North Fitzroy, received £4OO in payment for a property," and placed it under his pillow. During the night two men entered the room, held Hanrahn in the bed, and abstracted the money. They succeeded in escaping with their booty.
HbWING RATE FOR COAL.
SYDNEY, August 18. The Northern coal owners and the miners representatives will today discuss the miners' demand for an increase in the hewing-rate, in oonneotion with which trouble is again threatened.
CRIMPING AT NEWCASTLE
SYDNEY, August 38. The Rev. Mr Morgan, obaplain to the Seaman's Institute, denies the allegations made in the State Assembly regarding crimping at Newcastle. The shipping master, the police and the ship ping companies deny that crimping exists to any extent at Newcastle. Thej characterise the statements made in Parliament as wild.
