MASTERTON BOROUGH WORKS.
THE ENGINEER'S REPORT.
| The monthly report submitted by the Borough Engineer,to *he rneetI iug of the Masterton Borough Works Committee, last evening, stated, inter alia:—During the four weeks the staff has been employed renewing uld and dilapidated oulverts and oleaning water tables in Dixon, Bentiey, and Villa Streets; also making permanent crossings for private properties on the south side of Pine Stvoet, so that the path might be fit for asphalting during the ooming summer. The principal expenditure in wages during the month has been as follows:—Maintenance £G2 17s 2d, scavenging £26 Is 4d, park £l7 16s, street lighting £l4 14s 3d, Waipoua River £l3 25.6 d, drainage £l3 Bs, river crotection £ll 17s 9d, abattoir £4 15s, Churon Street extension £8 Is 6d, Makora Creek £l7 5a 9d, Bentiey Street £2 4s 9d. The question of properly grading Akura Road immediately above the railway line demanded immediate attention, and with a vies to preventing the water being dammed baok by tbe railway liues and accumulating near Mr Pinkerton's house, he had had some filling in done. As. Messrs Levin and Co.'s bulk stores and fences encroached on the publicroad at tbe point mentioned, the Council would be wise to have a definite arrangement with the owners regarding this matter before it was too late to do so. ■ ' Mr John Hunter, who has leased a> part of the Church Acre, having 38ft frontage to Queen Street and 100 ft frontage to Church Street, proposes to erect a building over the present oreek. If tbe Council have any intention of altering the Church Creek it is necssary that they should take aotion regarding the same at once. The work of cleaning Makora Creek is proceeding iu a satisfactory manner. Before preparing a contract for the Park extension I think the Council should view the ground, and decide the nature of the work to be done. If th>s were done tenders could be called for the work immediately thereafter. I visited the site for the Bentiey Street drainage, etc., aad explained the alternative schemes for drainage of this and Villa and Albert Streets to the Committee on the 3rd inst., but no decision has been arrived at yet. Albert Street, at the lower end, was also visited, and it was suggested to divert tbe Town Oreek and continue the present channelling. On the Bth inst. I visited the abattoir, in company with Dr Makgill and Mr Reakes regarding the drainage therefrom. The system in vogue was generally approved, whilst one slight amendment was suggested. Afterwards Dr Makgill visit©'! the drainage outfall, and examined the septio tank and sewerage beds, and inspected tbe various trunk sewers as regards the dilute nature of the sewerage and the infiltration of subsoil water. He also obtained particulars of the populated, parts of the borough which are not yet sewered. The half-yearly examination of plumbers was held for theory on Thursday and for pactioe on Saturday. Pour looal plumbers and four from Pahiafua sat. ' It was decided to put the work of grading Akura Road in hand it onpe; also to ask Messrs Levin and Co. /to remove their fence buck to the level of the other fences, and make some arrangements for leasing that portion of the public road on which their building encroaches. The Engineer was instructed to see that the piocer level of the Church Oreek is maintained. The Committee deoidedto visit the Park on Thursday afternoon, ac 3.30 o'olook, to view the ground in connection with the Park extension scheme. * Specifloations submitted by the Engineer for a footpath in Bannister Street, 35 chains in length, 10ft wide, kerbed and gravelled, were approved of. The report was then adopted.
