"PICTURES FROM THE BALKANS."

Wo hnvo to acknowledge receipt of ii copy of "Pictures From tfio BalkanV' forwarded to this ollico by Messrs McLcod ;uid i'oong, Tho author ia Mr John hosier Imaanr, whcso previous works "America at Work,',' "Canada As It l>i," and "The Real Siberia," aro very widely known. "Piciuroa From tho Balkans" is certainly quit-) up to tlio standard of Mr Franer's other works. Tho book ia brightly written, and i weil illustrated, though some of the picturcu border on "tlio horrible," and their presence in tho volume does not really eyom to ho necessary. A marginal note informs tho reader that tho , pugo "can ho torn out and destroyed by those who find tho pictures too horrible"— rather a gruesome manner of advertising tho book. According to Mr Fraeor thora were more murders in Macedonia in 1905 than dining any of tLie yeara which have thrilled Christian Europe, and caused; worthy folk to explain "Something must be done!" "What the worthy English Christian does not always realize," says the writer, "and what it is not the business of the propagandists to inform him is that most of the murdering now going on in the Balkans is by Christians of Christians." But the book should he read—it is useless in a brief review to attempt to give a fair idea of Mr Eraser's "Pictures." To use the author's words, "The Balkans is a confused kettle of fish"—and the took under notice certainly gives one each an impression.
