A NEW ZEALAND VIOLONCELLIST.

MS ARNOLD TROWELL.

(From Our London Correspondent).

LONDON, May 18. New Zealanders will be pleased to hear of the successes orer here of Mr Arnold Trowell, the well-known violoncellist from Welington, whose father is, perhaps, the best known of British colonial musicians. As you are no doubt aware, Mr Trowell, wito bis brother, the violinist, left your eountry about four years ago. They went to Germany, to Frank-fort-on-Main, to continue their musioal studies, and remained there two years, afterwards going on to Brussels. While there, the violoncellist had .the good fortune to be introduced to the King of the Belgian?, through the influence of Mr Gevaert, Director of the Oonservatorium, and the monarch encouraged him a good deal in his studies. At the end of six months he waa admitted into the public "concours," or examination, and had the good fortune to win the "premier prix"—this being the first time it has ever been awarded to any one under twenty—the age of your talented countryman was then seventeen. This brought him into fame at once throughout musioal Belgium. He then began giving concerts by himself and success has always attended him. Mr Trowell is now in London arranging for a serial of recitals at whioh he will produce among other works three violoncello concerts, wbioh'he has composed, also a set of variations on a Polish theme, whioh he has dedicated to Professor Klengel of Leipzig, and some smaller works. He plays upon a Stiadivarius violoncello, dated 1710. Mr Trowell has made languages a special study, and can now speak five fluently.
