FIRE AT GREYTOWN.
CARTERTON, March 16.
A fire, at Greytown last night, destroyed the Palace Hall and two other buildings. The fire brigade were promptly ou the scene, but the water gave out and rendered thein helpless. The two front ro ms of the hall were occupied as shops by a photograper aud tobacconist. The insurances oc each of the shops was £2OO. Tbe insurance on the hall amounted to £4OO ij the Now Zealand Insurance Oompauy. Tbe Rifle Volunteers used tbe ball as a drill shed, and kept their spare arms aud ammunition stored there. The latter were completely destroyed. They were insured for £IOO. It is estimated that the loss to the Volunteers will be about £SO. Two shops adjoining the Hall, a blacksmith's aud a fruiterer's were burnt to tbe ground. The loss is heavy. The Hall was recently bought by Mr G.. Robertson, who sustains a serious loss.
