FOOTBALL.

On Saturday, 9th July, at Upper ' Hutt, Lower Hutt defeated Upper Hutt. At present Lower Hutt is above "Upper Hutt, but if Upper Hutt defeat Lower Hutt at Lower Hutt sometime ! Really Lower is Upper with, the score 6—3 in favour of Lower. After a misfield the ball came to N. McCarthy, who endeavoured to punt it to safety, but the ball was kicked straight into an opponent's arms and he went over at the corner. The kick failed. At halftime Lower Hutt led by 3 points to nil. Play became faster and Upper Hutt tried hard to make up the leeway, but Lower Hutt's defence held. N. McCarthy opened up a likely movement which broke down through mishandling-. Lower Hutt, -with a determined rush, took play into the local 25 yards and Morton conceded a penalty which was converted and Lower Hutt led 6—o. Until the end of the game Upper Hutt now had the advantage, but could not finish off the movements. Upper Hutt was awarded a free kick at an awkward angle and Morton kicked a splendid goal.

The referee had to warn some of the players and although the game was -willing- enough it was not particularly rough. A free kick to Lower Hutt relieved the pressure, and the local side could not cross the line. The final whistle went with Upper Hutt defeated 6 3. RUGBY NOTES. Upper Hutt does not hook the ball. Throughout the season their opponents have been superior in that department. J. Skerten and R. Skerten were the best of the backs. Of the forwards St. Johnston, A. McCarthy and J. Jillett were the pick. C. Morton gave one of his poorest displays this season. Upper Hutt Thirds are doing splendidly with R. Mcßandell; and on Saturday last they defeated Varsity by 27—0. Pritchard scored three tries and converted three. D. Jillett, T. Bailey, J. Stevens and Godley scored tries. J. Pritchard, who is playing well, is a rugged player and has scored many points this season. Upper Hutt's contribution to the Centennial Exhibition fund is so far estimated to be about £l5O. Collection boxes for the convenience of residents who will want to contribute to the fund for assisting the Spanish Children Relief Fund, will be found about the district.
