SOCCER. FIRST ROUND CUP

(llfld over from previous ixsitn.)

SATURDAY, Ist JULY. Upper Hutt United 1, Petone 1. Upper Hutt kicked off, the ball flashing- from end to end, but the Petone quintette -were the first to settle to decisive shooting - , their centre firing- in a shot which Marsden smartly saved. Upper Hutt had an opportunity to score a little later, over-eagerness spoiling a chance. Bucknell eventually shot narrowly past the post. Upper Hutt forced the pace after this the half-backs rendering- fine service to the forwards, and deservedly opened the scoring before the interval, Hint receiving- the ball during a persistent assault on the Petone goal, and scoring with a fast rising shot. Petone opened strongly in the second half, and after nice, concerted play, carried play into Upper Hutt's goal area, and their centre, fastening on to a loose ball, ran in and, shooting with power, Marsden brought off a brilliant save by tipping the ball over the bar for a corner, saving what looked like a certain goal. Petone gained no advantage from the resultant corner, and Upper Hutt took over the roll as attackers, and after some nice play by Dunn, the ball went to Hartley and, cleverly beating two men, passed to Bucknell, who came near scoring, the ball just missing its objective. Petone turned defence into attack and with some pretty touches were soon around the home goal, and after some exciting exchanges, in which Newport played an important part, Petone managed to level the scores. Petone fully merited their success and after extra time had been played the game ended one-all after a splendid display by both teams. The issue was always in doubt, and one was pleased to see Bucknell making his first appearance for Upper Hutt this season. This player knows how to shoot. Marsden, in goal, again gave a masterly display and Newport played his usual good game in the half-back line, while much artistry was shown by the forward line. Petone were a well-balanced side, and a grand game should result in the return game.
