A SEVERE SHAKE. AUCKLAND, Dec. 1. 1 Tlie Star's WLaWiane correspondent wires that a violent earthquake, lasting, ailjout twenty seconds, followed by smaller tremourst, was experienced at 8.50 this morning. Some shop packages were shaken off the shelves. The shock is said to be heavier than those experienced at Whakatane during the Tarawera eruption, although ! not of us long duration. Whale Islwcl was enveloped in what appeared to be a dense dust, which gradually disapj peared and left the island in its normal state.
