ENSILAGE.
(The question " How long after ensilage is put up can it be utilised for feeding ? " is thus answered by a practical man : — Feeding from the silo may commence, about a week after it has ljeen filled, ..or it may be postponed indefinitely. Unless an artiple amount of ensilage is put up it is better to fepd green maize directly from the fifeld as long as it lasts than to befa |j&eding immediately from the silo. Ie average quantity of feed is from .ft to 451 bof -ensilage a day to each e^w. iThis means that -an acre of hitid yielding- 12 ions of green maize W»ll r .supply the average ration of enfcjilage for seven months to three animals. The amount of green maize frpm per acre ranges from eight to twenty-three tons. The ensilatye should always be fed after milking. If fed bffore it is apt to give the milk a tAStp. It is also important tluat mo ensilage is left lyinjr around in the njanger. Ensilage is one of the be*' foods that can be fed to cows. There are, of course, extravagant claims made for the silo. A feW enthusiasts advocate that putting green maize intio a receptacle of this Kind doubles its feeding value. It does U(o good to make assertions of this kind. Dairy qpws, as a rule, have given better results when fed on ensilage than when fed on equal amounts of maize. A considerable portion of/tlhe.dry fodder is not consumed by the stock, but all the ensilage is eaten. The stock, however, like the ensilage better than green make, a n.l will consume more of it, thereby leaving more nutriment to form milk after the wants of the body have been Buppße.d. Ensilage is more profitable the year through thun dry fodder. It is succulent, which makes- it a satist factory substitute for Stock will consume more- ensilage than dry feed. It greatly increases the number of animals that can be kept on a giv- , en acreage.
