BURGLARIES IN DUNEDIN.

Several cases of house- breaking and thefts from dwellings have come under the notice of the police dnring the past few days, and houses in different parts of the oity have been entered daring the absence of the occupiers, who have suffered more or less in consequence (says the " Otago Daily Times). Last Thursday the dwelling of Mr Howarth, in Maitland-street, was entered, and some jewellery annexed by the thief, wbo got inside by smashing a pane in i the kitchen window and forcing back the latch. Mr Bayley, of Howe-street, had his residence broken into on Sunday, and as one of the inmates considerately but injudiciously, left tbe key of the back door nnder the mat the thief was enabled to get inside without difficulty. After rummaging in several drawers be got away with 10s in silver and a brooch. Tn his harry be dropped a pound note on tbe floor, a fact that must have caused him a certain amount of mental disgust when be found it out afterwards. Other places recently entered were tbe premises of Mr < Galloway, of Walker-street, and Con- j stable M'lntyre, of Frederick-street, j For a policeman's own home to be robbed must have been rather galling to the owner, and it might reasonably be asked that if a policeman cannot protect bis own dwelling from robbery, what chance has the private citizen got of retaining possession of bis goods and chattels 1
