DEATH OF MR ARTHUR J. BURNS.

Monday's fl Otago Daily Times " says : — -" The death of Mr Arthur J. Burns yesterday morning has removed another of tbe early band of Otago's pioneers. Mr Burns's figure has been a familiar one in Otago for the last half-century, and bis hearty and cheerful greeting *will be missed by the many citizens who claimed his friendship. He has worthily upheld the character for persevering industry and indomitable courage pos- , sessed by many of tbe settlement's pilgrim lathers, and his enterprising spirit displayed itself in the founding of an industry which, in its subsequent career under the Mosgiel Woollen Company, has provided employment to a large number of our people and given scope for the profitable investment of local capital. In the days of the Provincial Council Mr Burns took his share in active political life, and he represented three different constituencies at different times in the House of Representatives, bnt has taken no part in general poUtics of recQQti years. He has for some time past been in tbe service of tbe colony bb one of its land valuers, and by his tact and good judgment haa widely enlarged the circle of bis acquaintances. We record his death with regret as that of a citizen with characteristics which made him widely respected and liked,"
