London, September 11. Lauw, with a commando of 250 men, attacked Sutherland, in the centre of Cape Colony. Ihe town guard and local rifles successfully defended the place. The commando retired during the night. Colonel Cavanagh drove back Theron's commando, thus preventing an attack on Mossel Bay, Aliwal South, about 200 miles west of Port Elizabeth. Colonel Crabbe at dawn on the 10th surprised and defeated Scheeper's chief lieutenant at Drifontein, killing Vandermerve, wounding several, capturing Field-cornet Dupleßsis (the cleverest Boer scout), and 37 others. The reßt fled eastward. Four British were killed. De la Bey's and Kemp s oommandoß, to the westward of Bastenborg, scattergd without fighting on General Methnen's approach. Lord Eoberts's final despatch mentions Nurse J. Williamson, of New Zealand, for special and meritorious service. In his eulogy of the Indian Princes he referred to their response to the demands for native camp followers, horses, equipment, and clothing. Satisfaction is also expressed with the promptitude and completeness wherewitn the War Office Administrative Department in ' England forwarded the troops, horses, material, and supplies.
